2 cups sugar
1 tablespoon butter
3 dessertspoons cocoa
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup milk
pinch of cream of tartar
pinch salt

Put all into saucepan and boil for 10 minutes. Take off heat and beat till creamy. Pour into buttered dish. When set, cut into squares.
Variation: add blanched almonds just before pouring into dish.
